What really lights you up? I mean what do you friggin’ absolutely love doing that makes time pass by like the speed of light? I’m talking about what makes you feel young, happy, and light-hearted inside. I bet it’s not shopping, or maybe it is. I don’t know. That’s for you to figure out, if you truly love it or you do it to soothe some area of your life that feels yucky and has now become an addiction.
When I ask if you are addicted to the right thing, what is that right thing to be addicted to anyway? The word addiction, as we all know, has a negative connotation and most of the time when we hear it, we think someone has some kind of obsession with something that’s unhealthy like drugs, alcohol, or porn. Those are real addictions but I’m not referring to these types of addictions, and I hope you’re not battling one of them. One definition of addiction is: “a strong inclination to do, use or indulge in something repeatedly.” (Merriam-Webster). In my opinion, addiction is something that can be either good or bad for you.
So, I ask again, are you addicted to the right thing? Take a moment to think about how you spend your time and how you feel in those moments. Are you addicted to material things, money (yes, some people have an unhealthy addiction to money), or social media? Maybe you’re addicted to eating healthy, spending time with family and friends, making a difference, experiences that make you feel alive. Yay! Those are healthy addictions and the right kind of addictions.
To get past an unhealthy addiction, you’ll need to replace it with a healthy one. Speaking of money and your finances, you might start by taking a look at your spending over the past few months. Where has your money really been going? You might decide to write down all the ways you were good and not so good with money at the end of each day so that you know what changes you need to make the next day. Getting addicted to taking control of your financial life could prove to be wildly beneficial. You could create a monthly money plan to use as a roadmap to keep you on financial track. Living by a money plan is the best way to spend in alignment with your values and to keep your spending under control.
Once you feel and see the results of your financial efforts, you might become addicted to your financial wellness. Well, that’s surely a good thing to be addicted to now isn’t it. Pursuing financial wellness allows you to grow and build confidence. When you become addicted to creating a healthy relationship with money, you’ll grow in ways you never thought were possible. You’ll be the financially confident woman you were meant to be.
